BEE GEES

The brothers Gibb were all born in Douglas, on the Isle of Man. Barry Alan Crompton Gibb was born 1 September 1946, and the twins Robin Hugh Gibb and Maurice Ernest Gibb on 22 December 1949. At the end of December 1957 the three brothers performed for the first time live with two friends. At a local Gaumont cinema children were invited to sing between films. The three brothers and their two friends called themselves the RATTLESNAKES. They had planned to mime to a record, which their sister Lesley had just got as a Christmas present. On the way to the cinema one of the Gibb brothers let the record fall to the ground, where it broke, so they had to sing live.

In 1958 the five boys performed several times, changing their name from the RATTLESNAKES to WEE JOHNNY HAYES & THE BLUE CATS. The musical career ended soon, when the Gibb family emigrated to Australia in 1958.

On their way to Australia Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb entertained the other passengers on board of the ship to Australia by singing. They called themselves BARRY & THE TWINS.

After their arrival in Australia the GIBB BROTHERS continued to play and sing. It didn't take them long to perform regularly at the local Redcliffe Speedway between races to make money for themselves. This was where a local discjockey Bill Gates got interested in the brothers. He liked their sound and was amazed that Barry Gibb wrote songs too, event hough he was only 12 years old. Gates made a tape of them performing six Barry Gibb songs. He played the songs regularly on the radio in 1959. The tape must have included "Let Me Love You", one of the songs he'd heard them do at the Speedway, and another song Barry Gibb had just written, called "(Underneath The) Starlight Of Love".

The brothers became known as the B.G.s. In March 1960 they had their first television appearance. Barry Gibb was writing lots of songs at this time, even though only very few survived. The brothers mostly sang popular songs of the day in their appearances, but there always were some original songs by Barry Gibb. There still exists a videotape of the B.G.s singing the Barry Gibb song "Time Is Passing By". In 1961 the stage act of the brothers included rock'n'roll songs as well as EVERLY BROTHERS songs. They mixed their act also with song parodies and comedy. When Barry Gibb succeeded to audition some of his songs for Col Joyne, this led to a recording contract for the group.

After signing a recording contract for the Leedon label the group started calling themselves BEE GEES. They recorded their first single early 1963. Over the next three years the BEE GEES recorded numerous songs, most of them written by Barry Gibb. They also recorded some outside material Like "Turn Around Look At Me" or "Every Day I Have To Cry". During this time the group often appear in television shows, where they also performed material by other artist such as the BEATLES or the HOLLIES. A lot of these performances were prerecorded and were later released on various compilation albums covering the Australian years of the brothers Gibb. Barry Gibb had a parallel career as a professional songwriter. In 1966 Maurice Gibb followed his brother Barry as a professional songwriter. Together with their producer Nat Kipner he wrote numerous songs for other artists. The BEE GEES were assisted by various friends for their recordings. In 1966 for their last Australian sessions the drummer was Colin Peterson and Vince Melouney played the lead guitar for some songs.

Most of the Australian recordings of the BEE GEES were rereleased several times. The most important rerelease being "Brilliant From Birth", the compilation from 1998 which had almost all recordings from the Australian years, including many of the prerecorded material for television shows. Another important release from 1998 was called "Assault The Vaults". This album was a collection of other artist's recordings of Gibb songs, most of those were recorded with the assistance of the brothers Gibb.

In 1966 the BEE GEES decided to leave Australia and travel to England. They hoped to start an international career in London. Unknown to the group Festival records already had made a deal with Polydor records to release the single "Spicks And Specks" in Europe. When Robert Stigwood heard some of the Australian recordings by the BEE GEES and some new demos he signed them to a recording contract for Polydor. The group immediately went to a studio and recorded as many songs as they could. For most of these recordings they were assisted first by Colin Petersen and later also by Vince Melouney. Colin Peterson was added first as an official member of the BEE GEES.

Shortly before the album was completed they also asked Vince Melouney to become an official member of the group. So by the time their first international album "Bee Gees First" had been released, the group had become a quintet. The BEE GEES proved with their second album that they had really become a group. The overall sound is much heavier and Vince Melouney's lead guitar is used more prominent on several songs. Vince Melouney stayed with the BEE GEES till the end of 1968 and was part of the worldwide success of the group.

After two very successful years the group started to dissolve. Vince Melouney was the first to leave. It was a friendly parting as they all recognized that their musical interests started to lead in different directions. Even though Vince Melouney was leaving the BEE GEES, he still accompanied them in the studio when they recorded their next album. He played most of the lead guitar parts, but was not credited on the album.

As soon as "Odessa" had been released Robin Gibb left the BEE GEES. He immediately started to record his first solo album "Robin's Reign". Most people do not know that in March 1969 Maurice Gibb helped his twin brother Robin to record. At this time it was not yet clear whether Robin Gibb had left the group or just wanted to take some time off. After a few weeks it became obvious that Robin Gibb had left the BEE GEES permanently. Early 1970 he started to record his second solo album, but when he reunited with his twin brother Maurice in June 1970 the recordings disappeared in the archives and the twins started to revitalise the BEE GEES.

After Robin Gibbs departure in March 1969 the remaining three members of the BEE GEES immediately entered the studio to record their next single "Tomorrow Tomorrow" with the backside "Sun In My Morning". There were discussions about a possible replacement. The group even appeared on television with their sister Lesley Gibb singing harmonies. From May 1969 to October 1969 they recorded the songs for their next album. In August 1969 it was announced that Colin Peterson no longer was a member of the BEE GEES.

When Colin Peterson was fired by Barry & Maurice Gibb, the BEE GEES rerecorded some of the songs with Geoff Bridgford on the drums. It was interesting to know that Geoff Bridgford had already replaced Colin Peterson in STEVE & THE BOARD in Australia. Shortly after the release of the album "Cucumber Castle" the end of the BEE GEES was announced. Barry and Maurice Gibb started solo recordings.

In 1970 Barry Gibb started to record some material for a solo album. The first release was the single "I'll Kiss Your Memory" with the flip side "This Time". The release of the album was postponed several times. In late summer of 1970 Barry Gibb performed two new songs "One Bad Thing" and "The Day Your Eyes Meet Mine" in a German television show. In a short interview he explained that those songs would be his next solo single release, but the single was never released. When the reunion of The BEE GEES became reality, the album was not released at all.

As soon the BEE GEES had split, Maurice Gibb started some recording sessions with Billy Lawrie. In almost no time they had completed Maurice Gibb's solo album "The loner". Unfortunately the album was never released. All the public could buy was a solo single with the songs "Railroad" and "I've Come Back". Maurice Gibb also started acting in the spring of 1970 and produced the cast album of the show "Sing A Rude Song". Another recording from the sessions with Billy Lawrie was later released under the name of the BLOOMFIELDS. This was an alternate recording of the title song of the planned solo album "The Loner". Maurice Gibb was also able to renew the contacts to an Australian friend, Steve Kipner. Steve Kipner was the son of the former BEE GEES producer and Maurice Gibb's song writing partner Nat Kipner. Steve Kipner had come to England with another friend Steve Groves to start an international career. Maurice Gibb helped the duo to produce their debut album. He did not only produce the album but he also played several instruments on it. In June 1970 Maurice Gibb and Robin Gibb got back together to record some songs.

When Robin and Maurice Gibb came back together in June 1970 they recorded enough material for an album release. The sessions started as Maurice Gibb solo sessions, but soon they became sessions for material the twins had written together. For the recordings the two brothers got assistance from Geoff Bridgford, who at the same time worked with TIN TIN.

Mid August 1970 Barry Gibb rejoined his brothers and they immediately started recording more songs. In the end all but two songs ("Lay It On Me" and "Sincere Relation") from the Robin & Maurice Gibb sessions disappeared in the archives. The same fate happened to an album's load of songs from the sessions with Barry Gibb. It was really amazing that the three brothers had recorded three solo albums, one duo album plus two group albums in less than a year's time but only one group album and two solo singles were released.

At the beginning of 1971 Alan Kendall joined the BEE GEES as their lead guitarist. The creative output of the brothers Gibb remained amazingly high. In addition to their own material Maurice Gibb continued to work and write together with Billy Lawrie and Barry continued to write material for other artists. The sessions for the album "To Whom It May Concern" started in October 1971. Early February 1972 Geoff Bridgford left the group. The recordings were completed with the session drummer Clem Cattini. Most of the songs released on the album were from the later sessions with Clem Cattini.

For concerts the group added Chris Karon on drums, but when the group went to America to record the next album they left the drummer behind and selected Jim Keltner as the drummer for the recordings. For the first time since the Australian years the BEE GEES also added some outside musicians to complete the sound. The BEE GEES recorded two albums worth of material. As they wanted to concentrate more on the American market they added the pedal steel guitar of Sneaky Pete Kleinow to some songs. Other had a violin or a harmonica. The first album out of these recordings was the BEE GEES' debut album for the new RSO record label, it was called "Life In A Tin Can". The single "Saw A New Morning" as well as the album gained poor sales and thus the group decided, not to release the second album, which originally should have been called "The Bee Gees Album", but than was renamed "A Kick In The Head Is Worth Eight In The Pant".

After the failure of "Life In A Tin Can" the BEE GEES started to restructure the group and their sound. At first they found a new drummer. Dennis Bryon had previously played with AMEN CORNER and now joined the group. The next step for the BEE GEES was to find a new sound. Together with Atlantic producer Arif Mardin they worked on a modern form of rhythm'n'blues music. At first they added more rock'n'roll to their music. The new songs began to develop more in a real rock band style. The vocals by Barry Gibb were more powerful then ever, and Dennis Bryon brought a straight rock'n'roll drive.

For the first time the BEE GEES became a sextet by adding the keyboard player Geoff Westley. Maurice Gibb now could concentrate on his bass playing and only occasionally played some keyboard parts. All three brothers now had more time for their harmony singing. Europe seemed to lose interest in the BEE GEES. Neither the single releases nor the album "Mr. Natural" were successful. In Australia and Asia though the group seemed to be bigger than ever. Arif Mardin was convinced that the group was able to create something completely new and therefore he arranged more recording sessions for 1975. Geoff Westley did not participate in the 1975 recording sessions, even though he often played with the BEE GEES in concerts as additional keyboard player up till 1979.

The new keyboard player was Blue Weaver, who also had played with AMEN CORNER and later with the STRAWBS. Blue Weaver was able to bring some fresh ideas to the group. More than any other non Gibb member of the group he participated in song writing and arrangements. The new lineup of the BEE GEES was the longest lasting BEE GEES band ever and many believe that this also was the most successful time for the group. Even though many people called the years from 1975 to 1979 the disco period, a lot of the songs released during these years have nothing in common with disco music. The BEE GEES continued to record their typical ballads, but the trademark of this period and also of many years after were the falsetto vocals. The BEE GEES were able to be successful again all over the world. At the same time they also wrote and produced songs for other artists. When RSO ended the cooperation with Atlantic records in America this ment that the BEE GEES could no longer use Arif Mardin as their producer. The BEE GEES chose to produce themselves, with Barry Gibb taking the lead. Karl Richardson and Alby Galuten were responsible for the engineering. Together with Barry Gibb they became a very successful team.

When Vince Melouney and the BEE GEES parted ways in 1968 some people thought that they would never meet again, but in 1976 Vince Melouney visited the group in England and he even wrote some songs together with Barry Gibb.

To reproduce the strings and the synthetic sounds that the group used in the studio they got Geoff Westley back in the live line-up. In 1977 they recorded some shows and put them together for the first ever BEE GEES live album. Even though the material was strongly based on the new songs the group also included many of the old hits, even though in shortened versions. Without Geoff Westley the BEE GEES recorded the songs for the Saturday Night Fever film. September 1977 to January 1978 put the live activities on a hold, as the brothers Gibb concentrated on the shooting of the film "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Most of 1978 was spent recording the next studio album and writing songs for other artists.

In 1979 the BEE GEES undertook a farewell tour for their longest lasting band. The BEE GEES touring band was the biggest band the group had employed ever. In addition to Blue Weaver George Bitzer and Harold Cowart were playing the keyboards. Joey Murcia was added as additional guitar player and Joe Lala occasionally played percussion. They had planned to change their touring schedule after the "Spirits Having Flown" tour.

After the end of the tour the three brothers started separate jobs. Barry Gibb started to produce an album for Barbara Streisand. All of the songs were written by the BEE GEES. In the end Barry Gibb ended singing duets and harmony with Barbara Streisand. Many consider the album as a joint effort by Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb.

Following the success of "Saturday Night Fever" it was decided to film a follow up. The BEE GEES were asked again to record some songs for the film. Barry Gibb brought in George Bitzer for the keyboard work and together with several session musicians the songs for the film were completed. In 1982 Barry Gibb produced an album for Dionne Warwick and in 1983 one for Kenny Rogers. For the Kenny Rogers album Barry Gibb is supported by Maurice, who at the same time works together with Robin and also works on some solo material.

While Barry Gibb concentrated on producing Dionne Warwick first and then Kenny Rogers, Robin and Maurice Gibb started work on the album "How Old Are You". Even though the album was released as a Robin Gibb solo album it is a duo album by the twins. Robin Gibb sings all the lead vocals, while Maurice Gibb contributes backing vocals and instrumentals, arrangements, and production. Dennis Bryon and Alan Kendall return and the keyboards are handled by George Bitzer. The duo comes up with a good album. Robin Gibb is very successful in Germany, and also in England, and he fails in the US.

Robin Gibb recorded his second solo album in the eighties again with a lot of input from Maurice Gibb. The result is an album strongly based on electronic instruments. There are only little hints of guitars on this album. The third album also featured Maurice Gibb. Interestingly the songwriting credits often showed all three brothers and Barry Gibb even made a guest vocals on one song.

When the solo projects plus the production work for others had been completed the BEE GEES started discussing a new album. At the end of 1985 there were rumours of a new album with Maurice Gibb singing the lead vocals on all tracks. But except for a note in the music papers nothing happened. In 1986 the fans could read reports that the BEE GEES would come to England to record their next album with George Martin as the producer but again nothing happened. Once the contracts with a new record company (Warner Brothers) had been signed in October 1986 the BEE GEES started to record their next album "E.S.P." The first single release "You Win Again" brought the BEE GEES back to the charts.

The BEE GEES had just started to record their next album, when Andy Gibb, their younger brother died. Shocked by these news the BEE GEES stopped their recording project for some time and only restarted at the end of 1988. Some of the songs on the album were about their brother. Even though the BEE GEES used again a group of session players to record the album, it was an improvement on their previous one.

The group wanted to do a world tour to promote the album. As the group of studio musicians, which had helped to record the album was not available for such a long tour, the brothers built a new backing group. Alan Kendall of course remained. New members were George "Chocolate" Perry, a good friend from Florida who usually played together with Stephen Stills on bass, another friend from Florida Michael Murphy, who had previously played with CHICAGO on drums. The group was completed by two backing singers, Tampa Murphy - the wife of Michael Murphy - and Linda Harmon and the brothers added Tim Cansfield on guitar and Vic Martin and Gary Moberley on keyboards.

BEE GEES DVD / video
1989: BEE GEES - Live / One For All ( ? )

When the BEE GEES recorded their final album for Warner Brothers, the sound was changing. The recordings were beased on electronic sounds, especially the drums were electronical. The overall sound of the album "High Civilisation" was cold, even though the BEE GEES succeeded in keeping typical elements of their old sound alive.

After their album releases for Warner Brothers the BEE GEES returned to Polgram and released an album, which many still regard as the best BEE GEES album ever. For the recordings of "Size Isn't Everything" the brothers strongly concentrated on the vocals. All three of them had solo spots as well as three-part harmonies. In addition to the album songs the group had also recorded additional material, which was released on various singles. In the studio almost the complete BEE GEES band helped to record additional songs with Lulu and with Kelli Wolfe.

Early 1994 Robin Gibb told the public in an interview that the BEE GEES were planning an acoustic album of material they had written for other artists plus some new songs. Later on this album was referred to as "Love Songs". Sometimes the album was described as a mixture of old recordings and new acoustic versions of "Emotion" and "Heartbreaker", which the brothers had written for other artists along with two new songs such as "Miracles Happen", "Love Never Dies" and "Rings Around The Moon". The album was planned for an early 1995 release date, but then suddenly it was cancelled and the brothers started to work on a new album. The brothers had the idea to have various producers help them record one song each with them. Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb started to write new songs in 1995 and the recordings also started 1995. Like before the BEE GEES recorded most of the songs with session musicians instead of the regular touring band. In 1995 the BEE GEES also recorded their version of an old Carole King song for a Carole King tribute album. The recordings reunited the brothers with Arif Mardin, who later on also produced some tracks for the new album of the group.

The BEE GEES were invited to record a show for VH1's Stortellers. For this show the three brothers just took added their keyboard player Ben Stivers and recorded the show. The complete show consisted of: New York Mining Disaster 1941 / To Love Somebody / I Started A Joke / Massachusetts / I've Gotta Get A Message To You / Words / Jive Talkin' / Stayin' Alive / Islands In The Stream / Heartbreaker / Lonely Days / Too Much Heaven / Still Waters / I Could Not Love You More / How Deep Is Your Love / First Of May / How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. Not all of these songs were used for the television broadcast. As the whole show had been recorded in very good quality, there is a possibility of a future release. Up to now only six songs have been released on CD - the first five songs were released on a special CD, which accompanied the album release of "Still Waters" exclusiveley for the American Target department stores, then in 2000 a VH1 sampler had the BEE GEES recording of "How Deep Is Your Love".

When the new BEE GEES album was finally released in 1997 the brothers Gibb assembled a new backing band, which was based on their last band. For some of the concerts they even added Barry Gibb's son Stephen Gibb to the line-up. In November their appearance in Las Vegas was recorded and later on released on CD. To make the whole show fit on one CD 6 songs were deleted. The Australian release had an additional 6 track CD featuring the deleted songs. In 1999 this 6-song CD was widely released - bearing the same title and almost the same cover as the album: "One Night Only".

At the end of 1997 Tim Cansfield replaced Stephen Gibb in the backing band. The BEE GEES play a few concerts only during this period. In 1998 the brothers started to write the songs for the new album, to be recorded in 1999. The recording sessions started as complete band sessions, were then interrupted by individual solo recordings and at the end of 1999 they came back together to complete the album, which was finally released early 2001.

At the end of 2001 Maurice Gibb started a recording project with his daughter Samantha Gibb. Together with Samantha Gibb's group MEG - named after her father (Maurice Ernest Gibb) - Maurice Gibb recorded some songs that were either written by the group members alone or together with him. For the recordings he also played the bass, the keyboards and synthesizers. In January 2003 Maurice Gibb suddenly had to go to a hospital for abdominal pain. He unexpectedly died in the night of 11/12 January 2003.

During the year 2002 Robin Gibb recorded his next solo album. Different to his solo releases in the seventies and eighties this time he did not want to showcase his own song writing abilities but those of young artists. He only co-wrote one song and he rerecorded two old songs. All the other compositions were done by other musicians. In addition to his own recordings Robin Gibb also helped other artists. In August 2003 Robin Gibb announced that he would rerelease his latest solo album "Magnet" with additional material. The song "A Lover's Prayer" was announced as a single release for September. A version with vocals by Robin Gibb, Wanya Morris and Lance Bass was even played on the radio. Neither the single nor the revised album ever were released. Instead he rerecorded and released "A Lover's Prayer" with Alistair Griffin replacing Wanya Morris.

After the final public appearances of the BEE GEES in 2001 Barry Gibb retired from the public for most of 2002. He slowly returned to work in 2003 when he produced two of his compositions for Cliff Richard. Interestingly though the musical background was taken from the earlier demo recordings and still feazured Mauirce Gibb. Most of 2004 was used to write the songs for the next Barbara Streisand album and to record them. The album was released in September 2005. Barry Gibb also started his own website where he released short films, mostly created together with David English. One festure of the website were chat rooms, where Barry disussed with his fans about various topics.

In 2005 it seemed impossible that Barry and Robin Gibb would ever come back together again, but then in February 2006 Barry and Robin Gibb reunited on stage for the first time since Maurice Gibb had died. They performed Saturday night, February 18th, in a private concert to raise money for the Diabetes Research Institute at their annual Love and Hope event held at the Diplomat Hotel.
