Vince Melouney

Vince Melouney was born August 18, 1945 in Sydney, Australia. Early 1963 Vince Melouney heard all the new music coming over from England and he wanted to form his own group. His idea was to create a new sound, a music showing the new influences but at the same time being something completely new. He talked about this idea with his friend John Watson. It didn't take them long to build their first group, the VIBRATONES.

After a few weeks the original drummer had taken ill, so that he could not play. He was replaced by Sunny Pratt. The new line-up recorded their debut single. The group did not succeed in recording their own musical style. Especially the Vince Melouney composition "Expressway" sounded like the SHADOWS. The single was no success and Sunny Pratt left to join the TELSTARS.

Mark Rigney became the new drummer for the VIBRATONES. He came in time for some concerts. Before the end of 1963 Vince Melouney and John Watson had new ideas about their future. Thus the VIBRATONES broke up.

At first Vince Melouney changed his name to Melouney and then together with John Watson he formed the AZTECS. They continued with instrumental surf music and released their first single in early 1964.

After the release of their debut single Val Jones left the group to study classical music. He was replaced by Englishman Tony Barber, who already had recorded with the RESONETS and the JOY BOYS. The group didn't stay a quartet for a long time though.

The instrumental age came to an end in 1964 and so the AZTECS needed a lead singer. They added Johnny Noble for the concerts and they even started to record an album with him.

In the end Johnny Noble did not want to join the AZTECS full time. While searching for a replacement Vince Melouney and John Watson met the former child actor Billy Thorpe, who wanted to start a new career in the music business. They completed the album together and changed the group's name to BILLY THORPE & THE AZTECS. The group did not only play regularly at Surf City in Kings Cross but also at the Beach House. Their first single release early 1964 ("Blue Day" b/w "You Don't Love Me") charted in Sydney only, but already their second single, their cover version of "Poison Ivy" became the number one in the national Australian charts, staying in the Top 40 for 16 weeks. After the success of their single BILLY THORPE & THE AZTECS changed the record label and signed a contract with Australian Parlophone. They released three more singles in 1964 and Parlophone also released the debut album of the group.

Early 1966 Vince Melouney formed another group, THE VINCE MELOUNEY SECT. Their first single release was a moderate hit, especially in the Melbourne area. The single was followed by a four track maxi single, which had two new songs in addition to the two original single tracks.

In 1966 Vince Melouney had played on various sessions for the BEE GEES. The songs he played on were released on different albums, such as the original "Spicks And Specks" or the compilation "Inception / Nostalgia".

Shortly before the album was completed they also asked Vince Melouney to become an official member of the group. So by the time their first international album "Bee Gees First" had been released, the group had become a quintet. The BEE GEES proved with their second album that they had really become a group. The overall sound is much heavier and Vince Melouney's lead guitar is used more prominent on several songs. Vince Melouney stayed with the BEE GEES till the end of 1968 and was part of the worldwide success of the group.

After the release of "Idea" Vince Melouney felt that his guitar playing wasn't needed any longer. He wanted to add more rock'n'roll to the music but the brothers wanted to include more ballads. In the end Vince Melouney left the BEE GEES but agreed to play on a few songs for the new album.

Once the cooperation with the BEE GEES had ended, Vince Melouney was looking for a new job. He started recording a solo album, which was announced in the music press as "Maiden Voyage", but the album was never released or completed. At almost the same time ASHTON, GARDNER & DYKE were looking for a replacement for their guitarist Steve Howe who had joined YES and for a manager. After a few weeks of rehearsals Vince Melouney became for a short time the manager of the group. Interestingly the debut album ASHTON, GARDNER & DYKE had a cover version of the BEE GEES' "New York Mining Disaster 1941" and a song called "Maiden Voyage".

After only a few months with ASHTON, GARDNER & DYKE the musical differences were to big and Vince Melouney left the management of the group. He was able to get a solo recording deal with MCA. When Vince Melouney started to rehearse material for his solo album he had the idea to assemble kind of a hard rock supergroup. At first he assembled Johnny Dick, Billy Green, Duncan McGuire and Doug Parkinson, but this line up was not the right mixture for the blues rock he wanted to play.

So Vince Melouney got in contact with his old friend Teddy Toi, who was doing session work in London at the time. In June 1970 the line up of the new band was stable with Vince Melouney, Johnny Dick, Doug Parkinson and Teddy Toi. They recorded some good songs and selected the right material for the album. The group made some notable appearances, including the Myponga Festival in January 1971. Unfortunately the group disbanded before the album was finally released in 1971. MCA released one single from the album, "Got To Get A Message To You" (which was a group original, not the Bee Gees song of the name) backed by "They're All Losers, Honey".
