Biography, discography & family tree

In 1958 Billy Ray Latham joined the White brothers. Now that they were a quartet they abbreviated their name to COUNTRY BOYS. Now they could play real bluegrass music. The line-up of this group was as follows: Clarence White on guitar, Roland White on mandolin, Eric White on acoustic bass and Billy Ray Latham on banjo. The COUNTRY BOYS performed in local radio shows, in various country shows and whenever they got the chance to play. During 1959 and 1960 they regularly played at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles. During this time the COUNTRY BOYS recorded their first single. At this time there were also some remarkable musical changes, Clarence White, who was just 15 years old, did not like to play the rhythm guitar only. Whenever he got the chance he impressed the audiences with his solo playing on the guitar. It didn't take him long to create his own unique style of playing. He did not impress by playing as many notes as possible but by playing exactly the right things at the right time. In the beginning his solos followed closely the original recordings but after a short while he improvised the solos the way he felt them. Most of the time the COUNTRY BOYS did not perform as a quartet. At a very early stage of their career they were joined by Leroy Mack (Leroy McNees). He was a master of the dobro and he was writting lots of songs. Due to this the concerts of the COUNTRY BOYS offered an interesting mixture of bluegrass standards and original material.

Eric White had to leave the COUNTRY BOYS in 1961. He was replaced by Roger Bush. During the concerts Roger Bush became the speaker of the group. He always found a humorous way to introduce the group or to announce the songs. His sketches became an integral part of the stage show of the COUNTRY BOYS and later of the KENTUCKY COLONELS.

In 1965 LeRoy McNees was introduced to Steve Hatfield by pastor Jim Despain. The two started to play some songs together. It didn't take a long time and the two musicians played regularly at their home church. They were even invited by other churches to play their Christian songs. In January 1966 the duo played their first real concert together. During the next few years the two started to write songs together.

After almost five years of playing together they wanted to record their first album. In the studio they got some help from Rudy Jones, who played the bass. The cooperation worked really fine and in the end Rudy Jones travelled with the group for almost three years. Rudy Jones left California in 1973.

Rudy Jones was replaced by the brother of Steve Hatfield, Dave Hatfield. Dave Hatfield did not only play the bass but he also added his baritone vocals to the harmonies. The group now changed their name to STEVE, LEROY & BROTHER DAVE. In 1974 the trio released their first album together, called "The Bluegrass Gospel According To Steve, LeRoy And Brother Dave". They released another album in 1976.

At the end of 1976 they met John Bivens. They were not happy with the name of their group and started thinking about a new one.

After various proposals, which did not meet everybody's expectations they started to perform as the BORN AGAIN BLUEGRASS BAND. They recorded their debut album as a quartet and released it in 1977. Unfortunately John Bivens had to leave the group at the end of 1978.

At the time when the BORN AGAIN BLUEGRASS BAND was looking for a replacement for John Bivens LeRoy Mack recorded his first solo album. For that album he got support from Byron Berline, John Hickman and Vince Gill who were playing together as BYRON BERLINE'S SUNDANCE at that time. Dave Hatfield joined on bass and Craig Wilson played the mandolin. The album was released in 1978 as "Hounddog Ramble".

While recording his solo album, LeRoy Mack had found the replacement for John Bivens for his BORN AGAIN BLUEGRASS BAND. It was Craig Wilson, who had played the mandolin on LeRoy Mack's solo album. Craig Wilson did not only play mandolin but also guitar. The first album of the new line-up was recorded in 1978 live at Hume Lake Christian Camp and was simply called "Born Again Bluegrass Band Live". The next album marked a return to the beginnings, when Steve Hatfield and LeRoy Mack had performed songs from the hymn book, as the album "The Old Country Church" comprised those songs only. The next few years saw the band performing regularly. In 1983 Dave Hatfield was leaving the band after ten years. Steve Hatfield, LeRoy Mack and Craig Wilson had to find a new bass player.

It didn't take them long to find the right person. They already knew the new bass player since the early seventies, when Lanny Cram and his band shared the stage with STEVE, LEROY & BROTHER DAVE. Now that the group was complete again, they continued to play regularly in churches and small halls. In 1987 they recorded the next album of the BORN AGAIN BLUEGRASS BAND, which was released as "The Pasadena Kid".

When Craig Wilson left the band in 1990, they asked Jerry Kinkade, who had played together with Lanny Cram in the group STILLWATER, to join the BORN AGAIN BLUEGRASS BAND, which he did. The first album they recorded together was called "Let Me Know You Lord". it was released in 1990. With three more albums in the nineties this line-up of the BORN AGAIN BLUEGRASS BAND was the most productive and also the most stable version of the group. In 2004 LeRoy Mack and Steve Hatfield decided to retire from performing regularly live music and thus the BORN AGAIN BLUEGRASS BAND broke up.

In between the activities of the BORN AGAIN BLUEGRASS BAND LeRoy Mack took some time off to record his second solo album in 1996. For the album he recorded some songs with the LAUREL CANYON RAMBLERS, some with the NASHVILLE BLUEGRASS BAND and some more with his own BORN AGAIN BLUEGRASS BAND. The result of all these sessions was released as "LeRoy Mack And Friends". LeRoy Mack also started to work as a session musician. Amongst the various projects there are especially two, which should be mentioned: At first there were two cassette only releases by Rudy Jones (who had been a part of the early STEVE & LEROY group), the other project was Herb Pedersen's LAUREL CANYON RAMBLERS.

On vacation in Canada LeRoy Mack met the Canadian bluegrass gospel group JERUSALEM RIDGE. Together they performed at a bluegrass festival and the musicians and the audience alike felt that the chemistry was right. After the successful concert they decided to start a project together. So in 2001 they met again and recorded an album together.

When LeRoy Mack was thinking about his next solo album, he immediately had the idea of reinviting some of his friends for the sessions. In the end LeRoy McNees went into the studio with Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen, who brought along some members of his LAUREL CANYON RAMBLERS band: Bill Bryson and Gabe Witcher. The result of these sessions was released as "LeRoy Mack - Smiles & Tears".

Even though LeRoy Mack had retired from active music life, he did not stop to play music. Whenever he had the chance to play at a festival he did, and he even took some time to record his music. In 2006 he was able to release his fourth solo album "Scratch'n My Beard".
