Skip Battin
biography, discography & family tree

Clyde Skip Battin was born on February 18th, 1934 in Gallapolis, Ohio. He got interested in music at an very early age. It didn't take him long to learn how to play the piano, the fiddle and the guitar.

Skip Battin got the chance to play regularly with a group called EARL MOCK & THE MOCKINGBIRDS.

In 1956 Skip Battin met Gary Paxton. They knew exactly, what their future should look like. They loved thr rock'n'roll music of Chuck Berry and in 1957 they formed their first group together, the PLEDGES. They released one single. When the single did not enter the chart, Gary Paxton and Skip Battin dropped the name of the PLEDGES.

1957: PLEDGES - Betty Jean (Gary Paxton) b/w Bermuda Shorts (Rev Records 3517)

Gary Paxton and Skip Battin recorded some more material, which they released on the Shad label. Not sure how to call themselves they changed their name for every release. One of these releases named the artists as CHUCK & THE CHUCKLES, but of course this was just another name of Skip Battin and Gary Paxton.

In 1959 Gary Paxton and Skip Battin changed the name of the group again and now they called themselves SKIP & FLIP. Some of the singles of SKIP & FLIP were rather successful. They released several singles as SKIP & FLIP. Their biggest hit was "It Was I". Some of their recordings were even released outside of the USA (Sweden, England, Canada, New Zealand).

Even though Gary Paxton left the duo, Skip Battin continued with new partners, but he could not repeat the success.

In October 1960 Skip Battin was a member of the group the PREHISTORICS. This group made some recordings. One of those songs, "Alley Oop Cha Cha Cha", is available on an album released by the Del-Fi Label.

Willie Pounds did not stay long. He was replaced by Chester McCracken on drums. The EVERGREEN BLUESHOES managed to release some singles and one album. The EVERGREEN BLUESHOES were called "the Beatles Of Topanga Canyon". The music had nothing to do with the BEATLES, but the EVERGREEN BLUESHOES were the biggest success in Topanga Canyon. For nine months they played at the Corral Club and then they recorded their album. The drummer of the BLUESHOES, Chester McCracken, left the group to become a session musician.

After the departure of John York Clarence White made the proposal to ask Skip Battin, with whom he had shortly played in 1968, to join the BYRDS. Roger McGuinn invited Skip Battin to some rehearsals and then decided to offer the job to him. Skip Battin, who had not gained any success with his EVERGREEN BLUESHOES, gladly agreed. Now the BYRDS had a stable line up again, which lasted for almost three years.

The BYRDS played about 200 concerts in 1970. They could demonstrate that they had become a fantastic live act. They played everywhere, from small clubs to colleges to stadiums. In between all those concerts they even found time to record new material for the next album. The recordings could not be completed because the BYRDS had to leave for a tour of Europe. During this tour they played old classics as well as new material, which had not yet been released.

BYRDS album
1970: BYRDS - Untitled (CBS 66 253) / rereleased 2001 as: Untitled / Unissued

The new album was a surprise to almost everybody. The group had recorded a double album. The first album had live recordings of new songs and old BYRDS classics. The old songs sounded fresh and had new arrangements. The second side of the live album had only one long version of "Eight Miles High". During the long improvisation Gene Parsons and Skip Battin could demonstrate that they had become a strong rhythm section. The real surprise was the second album. "Chestnut Mare" demonstrated the return to the former strength of the group. The album had material coming from all four members of the BYRDS.

A lot of the activities of 1971 reminded people of 1970. The recordings for the next album were interrupted by tour activities. The concert brought a mixture of old and new material. The album "Byrdmaniax" was released in June 1971. At the time of the record release the BYRDS were on tour again, this time in America. The BYRDS did not want to be connected to just one musical style. They played hard rock and bluegrass, folk music and country music, raga rock and jazz improvisations. They even changed the arrangement of some songs. "Mr. Tambourine Man" had been an acoustic folk rock song in the beginning, then it changed to an electric rock song, but then in 1971 in became an acoustic folk song again.

BYRDS album
1971: BYRDS - Byrdmaniax (CBS 64 389)

The album "Byrdmaniax" was not well received by the critics. The group partly blamed it on the production work of Terry Melcher so they decided to produce the next album all by themselves. The result is far better then "Byrdmaniax". But the critics didn't like "Farther Along". Perhaps the album offered too many different styles: from hard rocking to acoustic folk, from country to novelty.

During the first few months of 1972 the BYRDS continued to tour throughout the USA. The playlist had changed. Clarence White had brought some bluegrass material to the group. The BYRDS now also played "Soldier's Joy" or "Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms". "Mr. Tambourine Man" returned as an acoustic folk song. In August 1972 they played a concert together with the EARL SCRUGGS REVUE. 2 Songs from that concert were later on released on the album "Earl Scruggs Performing With His Family And Friends".

In September 1972 the departure of Gene Parsons was announced. The group's management told to the press that Gene Parsons had left the group to pursue a solo career. Parsons' replacement was the well known session musician John Guerin.

At this point Roger McGuinn had already started the reunion project, so that the other BYRDS started activities on their own. Shortly after this Skip Battin had to leave the BYRDS.

When the employment with the BYRDS ended in 1973 Skip Battin was able to record his first solo album. Clarence White played the guitar on all the tracks. The original drummer for the recording sessions was Billy Mundi, an old friend from the early sixties. When Billy Mundi had to return to the east coast, John Guerin took over. Even Roger McGuinn played on one song "Captain Video". So this is the only recording by the complete BYRDS line up. 1973 saw the release of Skip Battin's first solo album, simply titled "Skip".

The follow up recording, which was completed by the end of 1973, should have been "Topanga Skyline", but due to the energy crisis, which resulted in a shortage of vinyl, the record company decided not to release that album. Skip Battin remembered: "Clarence (White) was killed two days before the beginning of the recordings. He had already rehearsed with us. We decided to go on with the recordings. Byron Berline played as well as Alan Munde and Roland White. Mike Botts played the drums. Al Perkins originally came to play pedal steel guitar but then he also took over the lead guitar, which Clarence was supposed to play."

Of course there were the typical Skip Battin / Kim Fowley songs but this album also showed a strong bluegrass influence. Before Skip Battin could decide what to do, once that his record company had refused to release the album, he got the offer to replace Dave Torbert as bass player of the NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE.

Some friends of the NEW RIDERS made the proposal to invite Skip Battin to join the group. Battin was looking for some new adventures as his solo career didn't really take off. His arrival in the line up of the NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE refreshed the sound tremendously. Some people had feared that Battin would bring more of his novelty songs penned together with Kim Fowley. As soon as the first concerts of the new line up of the NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE were over everybody was full of praise. Skip Battin had returned to his powerful bass playing and the new songs he had to offer displayed a freshness that his last recordings with the BYRDS were missing. He even convinced the group to play Bob Dylans "You Angel You". Everybody was curious to hear the first studio album of the new group.

1975: NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE - Live On Stage (Relix Records RRCD 2059) (veröffentlicht / released 1993)

The new album "Brujo" was released in 1974. In adition to the Dylan song the group had recorded no less than 4 Battin Fowley compositions. Those songs were excellent . Skip Battin sang the lead vocals on the country rock song "Big Wheels", on the ballad "Singing Cowboys" - with three part harmonies - and on the latin tingered "On The Amazon". The fourth Battin song "Neon Rose" was sung by Spencer Dryden. The album release was followed with a successful tour.

The NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE even found time to record their follow-up album. "Oh What A Mighty Time" could not repeat the freshness of "Brujo". The arrangements were overloaded. The gospel choirs and the soul influences were out of place. The songs were not up to the quality of the former album. Skip Battin had only one song "Strangers On A Train" on that album.

In the end Columbia records did not renew the recording contract and so the NEW RIDERS had to look for a new record company. They finally got a new contract from MCA records and immediately started to record their debut album for the new label. During this time Skip Battin got a phone call from Gene Parsons, his old colleague from the BYRDS. Parsons was now playing with the reformed FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS and he offered to Skip Battin the job of the bass player. After some thinking Skip Battin discussed the new situation with his colleagues in the NEW RIDERS and they told him to accept the offer. Skip Battin agreed to complete the album with the NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE and leave after the recordings were completed.

All in all he recorded three albums together with the NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE plus one live album, which was released in 1993. Skip Battin stayed friends with the NEW RIDERS and he even rejoined the group at a later point...

When Chris Ethridge left the FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS they asked Skip Battin to join. Battin agreed, but at first he had to complete his last album with the NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE. The BURRITOS had already selected the material for the album so that Skip Battin did have no composition on the final album. "Airborne" covered a wide range of musical styles: from rock music to country and the group even tried to play country reggae music. After the recordings the group immediately went on tour to present their new material to their audiences.

In December, after nine months with the BURRITOS Skip Battin announced that after almost twenty years in the music business he wanted to retire.

Skip Battin wanted to become a farmer but he could not stop playing music.

On December 2nd, 1977 the FLYING BURITO BROTHERS were born again. In addition to Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Gib Guilbeau and Skip Battin Robb Strandlund and John Maucery were completing the line up.

In order to survive the FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS had to tour constantly. Robb Strandlund did not want to leave his family for a long time and so he decided to leave the group.

An old friend of Gib Guilbeau, the guitarist Bob Warford, joined the group for a few concerts.

Shortly after John Maucery got the offer to join Bob Weir group BOBBY & THE MIDNITES. Was this the end of the BURRITOS?

In March 1978 Skip Battin went to see a concert of his friends of the NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE. Backstage Spencer Dryden, the drummer who had become the manager of the band, asked Skip Battin whether he would be interested in rejoining the NEW RIDERS. Battin told him, "of course I'm interested but only if Sneaky Pete and Gib can join us too!" Battin did not know that Buddy Cage had decided to leave the NEW RIDERS latest after the tour.

The result of this dicussion was that in April Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Gib Guilbeau and Skip Battin joined forces with John Dawson, David Nelson and Patrick Shanahan. The team of these six musicians lasted three weeks only. Gib Guilbeau and Skip Battin agreed that there was not enough room for musical developments and that especially John Dawson and David Nelson did not really care for the future of the band.

Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Gib Guilbeau and Skip Battin received at this point an offer to tour Japan as the FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS and left the NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE.

Some posters and newspaper articles in Japan announced a FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS line up with Jimmy Ibbotson and Gene Parsons. Both were invited but had no time to join. The line-up of the FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS was completed with Ed Ponder on the drums and with a multi instrumentalist they had heard at the Palomino. This young man was Greg Harris.

During their tour in Japan the FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS recorded a live album for Nippon Columbia, which was released as "Close Encounters From The West Coast". Skip Battin does most of the speaking on stage and during "Six Days On The Road" he introduces the members of the band while the group continues to improvise.

Shiloh records who already had released several solo albums by the members of the FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS announced a live recording by the group, to be recorded at McCabes. They cut some more demos at Criterion Music in Hollywood. This time they get a record contract with Curb records. The demo recordings were released in 1990 on the album "Hollywood Nights 1979 - 1982".

The demo recordings for "Hollywood Nights 1979 - 1982" were the last studio recordings Skip Battin made with the BURRITO BROTHERS. Even though he was shown on the cover of the group's debut album for Curb Records, "Hearts On The Line" he was not envolved in the recordings. Rumours have it that Skip Battin was fired from the BURRITOS because he had started to record a solo album.

In 1981 Skip Battin was asked to leave the BURRITOS, because their management didn't like that he had recorded another solo album ("Navigator"). The album presents the typical Skip Battin sound: old fashinoned rock with country and folk music. For the recordings Skip Battin had been assisted by Sneaky Pete Kleinow and Greg Harris amongst others. Unfortunately Skip Battin had only few chances to present his new material to an audience.

At the end of 1981 Skip Battin visited Italy together with Chris Darrow, Sneaky Pete and Steve Duncan. They had been invited to assist the Italian rock'n'roll artists Ricky Gianco with recordings. There were even talks about the possibility of a tour. The four musicians called themselves the AMERICAN COUNTRY ROCK ALL STARS. They planned to record an album during the tour of Italy. The recordings with Ricky Gianco took longer than expected and so Skneaky Pete Kleinow and Steve Duncan had to return to America.

Skip Battin stayed in contact with Sneaky Pete Kleinow and Greg Harris. He invited both musicians to join him in July 1982 for a concert in Eugene, Oregon. The HUI Concert was a one day festival. Amongst the musicians participating were Dan Hicks, Hoyt Axton, Maria Muldaur, Taj Mahal, Mason Williams & Byron Berline and BATTIN, KLEINOW & FRIENDS. Another group project Skip Battin started in the summer of 1982 and which lasted till the beginning of 1983 was called the OLDER BROTHERS. They were formed by Skip Battin, Eddie Ponder and a singer named Larry Dale, who was a typical country blues guitarist from Memphis, Tennessee. They did many gigs around L.A. They were "working not too much seriously, at a low profile professionally", said Skip Battin, "but with a lot of fun!"

In April and May 1983 Skip Battin toured in Italy. He was accompanied by the Italian guitarist Ricky Mantoan. They both played acoustic guitars and sang. Their performances were well accepted by the audiences. The duo presented most of the songs from Skip Battin's next album as well as a lot of classic songs from the BYRDS, the BURRITOS and even two songs recorded by the BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD. Skip Battin even sang some songs in Italian language.

At the end of 1983 Skip Battin's third solo album was released. "Don't Go Crazy" had to offer some surprises. The second side of the album presents Italian songs partly sung in Italian language. The first side had songs that were already well known amongst the fans of Skip Battin. First of all one had the chance to hear a studio recording of "Santa Ana Wind" the song that was very successful during the concerts. Then there was Skip Battin's own version of "Do Not Disturb". Finally there were three rerecordings of songs that would have been on the "Topanga Skyline" album.

The group played everything from rock'n'roll classics like "Alley Oop" to country- and bluegrass music. Even the BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD songs Skip Battin had played earlier in Italy were played. Gene Parsons offered the "Mercury Blues" and "Take A Whiff". The PEACE SEEKERS even manage to come to Europe in 1984 where they play a tour with Roger McGuinn. The concerts start with Roger McGuinn doing his solo acoustic material. The second set is played by the PEACE SEEKERS and in the end they all combine for some BYRDS songs.

At the end of 1984 the PEACE SEEKERS heard that Gib Guilbeau and John Beland had decided to finish their cooperation as the BURRITO BROTHERS. In 1985 Skip Battin, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Greg Harris and Jim Goodall revived the FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS. Gene Parsons was not interested in participating in the new BURRITOS.

The FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS toured a lot during the next few years. Unfortunately they were not able to record a studio album, but they released four live albums. The songs the group played were old BURRITO and Gram Parsons songs and new Greg Harris compositions.

In 1987 Skip Battin met John York and they decided to do some recordings together. They went to Italy and met Ricky Mantoan and a drummer called Beppe D'Angelo. After some rehearsals they went into a studio and recorded some songs. Once the album was completed they even managed to play a few concerts. But then Skip Battin and John York flew back to America and the album disappeared in the vaults, until in 2001 the Italian record company Folkestdischi released it.

Skip Battin left the ROGER/NIENHAUS BAND in 1997 and announced his retirement from musical activities.

Since his retirement there are rumours that Skip Battin is working on an retrospective album covering his whole career, but nothing has been confirmed so far. The only activities since have been some session work for Connie Cohen, whose album "Heading Out" was released in the year 2000 and for a Brian Cutean album.

Skip Battin died on the evening of July 6th, 2003, of complications from Alzheimer's disease.

His his long-time girlfriend and caregiver, Peggy Taylor, was with him at the end. His son, Brent, had spoken with him over the phone late in the afternoon. Skip Battin will be missed by his family and friends and of course by music lovers all around the world.
