Gene Clark and John York were joined by Pat Robinson and together they wrote many songs. They even recorded the material, but they were not able to find a record company to release the songs. They often were referred to as CRY. The group's name took the first letters of their respective names (C for Clark; R for Robinson and Y for York).

Luckily enough some of these recordings were released in 2001 (on various semi-official releases, such as "It's All In Your Eyes" or "The Byrds". These albums had photographs of either the original BYRDS or the 1972 BYRDS. Some songs on these releases were old BYRDS songs, recorded by session musicians, the other songs came from various CRY sessions.) The album "BYRDS - Most Famous Hits / The Album" also had some of these rerecordings but that 2-CD set collected many CRY recordings. In 2000 there was a CD-R release credited to CRY - the album did not have the original recordings though but Clark-Robinson-York songs that John York and Pat Robinson rerecorded.
