DILLARD & CLARK
Biography, discography & family tree

Doug Dillard, who had just left the DILLARDS in 1967 wanted to record a solo album. For the recording of this album he assembled a group of friends around him. Bernie Leadon brought along David Jackson and Doug Dillard got Gene Clark and Don Beck. As the musicians liked the way they were working together they stayed together to form a group. They chose the name DILLARD & CLARK because they thought that with Doug Dillard and Gene Clark in front the success would be guaranteed and recorded "The Fantastic Expedition Of Dillard And Clark". This album had an acoustic approach to rock music.

Michael Clarke was not the right drummer for DILLARD & CLARK, therefore he left.

The FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS, who had started with Jon Corneal as their drummer felt that Jon Corneal was playing country drums and so they asked Michael Clarke to replace Jon Corneal.

The second album release from DILLARD & CLARK ("Through The Morning Through The Night") indicated that the group had nothing new to offer. The original ideas of the first album and of the first concerts had gone. The new album was just good music without anything extra. Gene Clark also didn't like the new style of DILLARD & CLARK. He wanted some rock songs but the group got more and more acoustic. Doug Dillard and Byron Berline returned sometimes to their bluegrass roots. At the end of 1969 Gene Clark called it quits. He left DILLARD & CLARK to concentrate on his solo career.
