Even
though the first musical steps did lack the professionalism, David Crosby was
encouraged to start a real musical career.
In 1962 David Crosby met a black musician with the name of Terry Collier. Together they performed as CROSBY & COLLIER. They mixed folk songs with jazz influences and were able to offer something very special.

David Crosby soon left the group, as he was still searching for a new musical style.
David Crosby hoped to create the new style with his next musical partner, Clem Floyd. They started as a duo.

1963 was the year of folk-pop-music. Les Baxter, who had a popular orchestra wanted to add a vocal group that was able to sing folk tunes. He asked David Crosby, if he could find him such a group. David Crosby recognized immediately that this could be the chance to start a professional career in music and therefore he got his brother Ethan as well as Bob Ingram and Mike Clough to join Les Baxter. They became known as Les Baxter's BALLADEERS. Some recordings of the BALLADEERS were released on the compilation album "Jack Linkletter presents A Folk Festival.

When Jim Dickson - a well known producer - heard Crosby sing he offered him to record some demos with him. David Crosby immediately went into a studio and recorded some songs, which were released many years later on various compilation albums.

Whenever David Crosby had the chance to listen to live music he did it. One evening he had the chance to visit a concert by two young musicians: Jim McGuinn and Gene Clark.

Now they were close to a real group. The only things missing were a name and a rhythm section. Jim McGuinn came up with the name JET SET. Even though the other two members of this group thought the name was too futuristic, they accepted it. In the end everybody remembers this trio as JET SET. Out of all the recordings they made during this time, two songs ("You Movin'" and "The Only Girl") have been released on the sampler "Early L.A" on Together records. Other recordings from this time were included the retrospective BYRDS records "Preflyte" and "In The Beginning".

While they were looking for additional musicians Jim McGuinn, David Crosby and Gene Clark started to write and record some songs together. Jim Dickson got a recording contract for them with Elektra Records. The only thing they didn't have was a rhythm section. They recruited Michael Clarke as the drummer. David Crosby tried to play the bass, but he didn't feel comfortable with that instrument.

Jim Dickson, their manager, knew that they had to have a unique style. Therefore he decided that the group had to practice day in day out. From all the recordings they had already made the two songs "Please Let Me Love You" and "Don't Be Long" were selected as tracks for the single release, but Dickson insisted that those songs should be rerecorded with the help of session musicians. Ray Pohlman played the bass and Earl Palmer was hired for the drums. Jim McGuinn played his twelve string guitar and Gene Clark the rhythm guitar. The vocals were provided by McGuinn, Clark and Crosby. Jac Holzman, head of Electra Records, did not like the group's name JET SET, therefore he named them BEEFEATERS. This is the reason, why the first single release has got this unusual name.

The recording was fine but Dickson was convinced that the song could be done even better, so he got some session musicians and they rerecorded the song again. This time only the guitar of McGuinn and the vocals of McGuinn, Clark and Crosby came from the group. After discussing many different names the five musicians agreed that BYRDS would be the right name for them.

Their debut album was released in 1965 and it offered an interesting mixture of Bob Dylan tunes and Gene Clark compositions. All the songs on "Mr. Tambourine Man with the exception of the single version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "All I Really Want To Do" were recorded by the five musicians. In 1965 they even flew to England for their first European tour.

In 1966 their second album "Turn Turn Turn" was released. After the recording of two new songs - "Eight Miles High" and "Why" -, which were released as the BYRDS' next single. Gene Clark, who didn't like flying, left the group in 1966.

David Crosby went on holidays first. After his return he started to produce an album for Joni Mitchell and when he was introduced to Graham Nash a lifelong friendship started. In May 1968 David Crosby and Stephen Stills started a new recording project. They went to Wally Heiders' studio and recorded various songs. Stephen Stills played most of the instruments, the only outside musician was Jack Casady who played the bass parts for some of these songs. When David Crosby and Stephen Stills started to play their new songs at friends' parties everybody was impressed. The only thing missing was a high harmony voice. David Crosby immediately thought about calling Graham Nash, but then he did not want to break up the Graham Nash's group, the HOLLIES. Crosby and Stills were still looking for a third vocalist when suddenly Graham Nash was in Los Angeles. Nash had left the HOLLIES and now he joined David Crosby and Stephen Stills. A new group was born: CROSBY, STILLS & NASH. The three musicians had already written enough songs for a debut album. Most of these songs had been rejected by their former bands. Stephen Stills, who played most of the instruments made the proposal to add his friend Dallas Taylor as drummer to the band. David Crosby and Graham Nash agreed and the quartet recorded the debut album.

The album was an immediate success,
but the group could not start with concerts as they still needed additional
musicians for the electric sets. CROSBY, STILLS & NASH started looking for
a bass player and for another musician who could play guitar or keyboards.
Stephen Stills got in contact with Stevie Winwood but he was not interested. Mark Naftalin also did not want to join. At this point Ahmet Ertegun the president of Atlantic Records, made the proposal to ask Neil Young to join. Even though Stephen Stills did not really like the idea of having Neil Young in the group, he accepted to talk to him. To the surprise of most Neil Young accepted - if his name would be added to the groups name. Stephen Stills and Neil Young had already played together in BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD and therefore it was not unusual that they planned to add Bruce Palmer, who had been the bass player for BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD to the new line-up. With Bruce Palmer they started rehearsals for a tour and they even made some recordings.

Bruce Palmer was not the right person for the group. Musically he had completely different interests and so they parted company.
The new bass player was a nineteen year old session musician, who already had worked for three years for the record company Tamla Motown. His name was Gregory Reeves. After week long rehearsals the group played their first concert on August 16, 1969 at the Chicago Auditorium Theatre. The day after this concert changed the life of the group completely: They were playing at the Woodstock Festival. After their concert everybody was raving about the absolute supergroup. In October 1969 CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG continued with the recordings of their new album. It was released in March 1970 as "Déjà Vu". The group decided to go their separate ways after the release of the album and come back together at a later point.

The break didn't last long though. When Neil Young saw photographs of the student riots in Ohio, where the police shot 4 students. He wrote a song about that. CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG recorded the song immediately and on June 4, 1970 it was released om a single. The group also started to organize the next tour, but Dallas Taylor and Gregory Reeves asked the others to include songs they had written. They could understand that their songs should not be part of album releases but they had no understanding for their songs not to be include in the live set. In the end they were fired.
CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG replaced Gregory Reeves by Calvin Samuels on bass Dallas Taylor had to stay for one more concert in Denver.

After the release of their respective solo albums David Crosby and Graham Nash started a long tour as an acoustic duo. During their concerts they did not only play the songs of CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG or of their solo releases but also some new songs that were not recorded yet. Nobody had doubts that the duo could sing the best harmonies, but everybody was surprised that they also played excellent guitar and piano. In 1997 Grateful Dead Records released some recordings of the concerts as "Another Stoney Evening"
At the end of 1971 David Crosby and Graham Nash started to record their first duo album. The first song they started, "Urge For Going" was not completed, as they had some arguments about it. This song was included in the 4-CD compilation album that was released in the nineties. After some weeks without recording the duo assembled a group of top session musicians and started again to record their first album. The album is released in 1972. It features most of the new songs that were already played during the concerts.

In September 1971 David Crosby and Graham Nash had assisted Neil Young to rerecord his song "Alabama". On October 14th 1971 Neil Young joined the duo during a concert in Berkeley. The biggest surprise came in 1972 when CROSBY, NASH & YOUNG played some concerts together. The first of these concerts was on March 26th at the Winterland in San Francisco and the last took place in October at the same place. The trio played songs from the album "Graham Nash & David Crosby" as well as from "Harvest". There were only a few songs from CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG ("Wooden Ships" / "Almost Cut My Hair") and there even was a new Graham Nash song ("And So It Goes").

In 1973 Neil Young toured with his new group the STRAY GATORS. In March he got problems with his voice and so David Crosby and Graham Nash join the group for the remaining concerts of the tour. Neil Young did not want to play the songs of his album "Harvest" during the tour as he already had numerous new songs which were rather aggressive in style. Together with David Crosby and Graham Nash the album "Time Fades Away" is recorded.

The music critics did not like the album and so it mostly got negative reactions. A reunion tour, which they had discussed never materialized. The BYRDS and especially Roger McGuinn had not expected such a bad criticism. That was the end of the BYRDS.
There have been several groups picking up the name as "BYRDS FEATURING MICHAEL CLARKE" or "TRIBUTE TO THE BYRDS" or "BYRDS CELEBRATION" but none of these groups were the "real" BYRDS", so the story ends here. All the details of the other groups can be found in the individual chapters of the musicians envolved.
In May 1973 rumours of another CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG reunion were spreading. The four musicians were on holidays on Hawaii and they decided to record another album together. They rehearsed several new songs like "See The Changes" written by Stephen Stills, "Human Highway", "Pardon My Heart" and "Through My Sails" written by Neil Young and "And So It Goes" and "Prison Song" written by Graham Nash. The demo recordings were done partly on Hawaii partly in the studio of Neil Young's Broken Arrow ranch. CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG interrupted their recording sessions to play some concerts. After their first concert on July 7th, 1973 the group parted company and went their separate ways again. The album was never completed.

CROSBY & NASH had some problems, when they wanted to tour in promotion of their new album. As most of the musicians of their band at the same also were well respected session musicians, only Craig Doerge and David Lindley were able to accompany David Crosby and Graham Nash. Most of the new songs were rearranged to match the acoustic format of the new band. The group also played songs, which were not released yet, such as Graham Nash's song "Cathedral".

Only the Crosby and Nash song "Taken At All" survived and appear later on on the 4-CD box.

Together they recorded another album, which is reagrded as one of their best albums ever. Once the album was released CROSBY, STILLS & NASH undertook another tour. For some concerts Kim Bullard from POCO helped on stage to recreate the studio sound.

Craig Doerge had to leave the group in October and he was replaced by Kim Bullard. The concerts were always close to perfect. The audiences could hear that the group really enjoyed playing together. At the end of 1977 the group had a short break and then they came back early 1978 to record their next album. Somehow the enthusiasm of the previous year had gone. They worked on five songs and made another break. In the summer of 1978 they met again but only Graham Nash had another new song. During the concerts the group played the same quality as in 1977. After the tour CROSBY, STILLS & NASH went again into the studio to complete the album but they were not able to succeed.

Graham Nash tried to regroup CROSBY, STILLS & NASH in 1979. In the end the group came back together for some No Nukes concerts, but they had nothing new to offer. David Crosby was suffering from drugs and it looked as though it became more and more difficult to work together with him. Some of the No Nukes performances were recorded. Three songs by CROSBY, STILLS & NASH were later released on the compilation album.

In 1980 David Crosby started to record his second solo album at Graham Nash's studio. When the album was completed in September 1981, Capitol Records refused to release it. Dave Zimmer who was lucky to hear the album reported that he heard David Crosby singing wordless songs in perfect harmony. He could not understand, why Capitol refused to release the material. The songs were typically David Crosby. Even after rerecording some of the songs Capitol refused to release the album.
After the recordings David Crosby started to tour again. He was accompanied by a young guitarist, Karl Schwindeman.

Graham Nash and Stephen Stills had formed their own own band in 1980 and when they were ready to release their debut album the record company refused to release the duo work. They insisted of getting a complete CROSBY, STILLS & NASH album. So the three of them came back together and selected 10 songs of the STILLS & NASH album plus another two songs from the unreleased David Crosby album. They added some more harmony vocals and within almost no time they could present the new CROSBY, STILLS & NASH album to the public. The group also played a tour. Thanks to the excellent backing band the group sounded fresher than on the album. On stage almost nobody remarked the increasing drug problems of David Crosby. In 1983 a live album with recordings from the tour of 1982 was released. Interestingly the David Crosby songs were not recorded in 1982 but already in 1977...

In 1983 CROSBY, STILLS & NASH went on the road again. They had no new material to present and David Crosby had even more problems than the year before. The show and setlist was almost the same as the previous year. Nevertheless the European fans were delighted to see the old stars in concert and the applauded enthusiasticly. After their return to America David Crosby was finally emprisoned.

During the tour CROSBY, STILLS & NASH had to replace the bass player Kenny Passarelli by George Perry, but that was the only change one could write or talk about. Musically the tour offered nothing new except for some Stephen Stills songs off his latest solo album. After the tour the musicians went their separate ways again and decided, to come back together for the 1985 summer tour.

July 13th, 1985 could have been a very special date in the history of CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG. During the the "Live Aid" concerts the four musicians reunited for some songs. The performance was horrible. There was no harmony. The rehearsals had been much better according to Neil Young.

Neil Young announced several times that he is interested in reactivating CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG, once David Crosby has settled his life. Thus the fans hoped that there might be hope for the future of the group. After less then a year in jail David Crosby comes free again on August 8th 1986. He immediately contacts his former bandmates and they all were interested in coming together again. The first sign of life comes on October 13th 1986, when David Crosby and Graham Nash join Neil Young and CRAZY HORSE on stage for a few songs during the first Bridge Concert.
At first David Crosby played a few solo concerts. During these concerts he plays not only the songs from the past but he also offeres some new material.

Rumours came up that they had recorded a new album which should be released any day. Neil Young declared that this was not true, but that surely there would be a new joint album sometimes in the future.

In February 1987 CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG entered the studio to record their next album. The recordings were finished in May 1987. In June and July the group did the final mixes and in November 1987 almost sixteen years after their debut album "Déjà Vu" they released "American Dream". The album offered all the details the fans loved about the group. Unfortunately CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG only played some short acoustic sets at various benefit concerts (Children Of The America Hungerthon: November 12, 1988 / 2nd Bridge Benefit: December 4, 1988 / 3rd Bridge Benefit; October 28, 1989).

The eighties ended with a reunion of Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and David Crosby. In 1989 Michael Clarke was performing with various musicians as MICHAEL CLARKE'S BYRDS. McGuinn, Hillman and Crosby did not like that Michael Clarke had taken the name so they tried to get the rights to use that name. They played a few concerts - like the Roy Orbison tribute - and they even recorded a few songs, which were later on released on the 4-CD-retrospective. For the concerts they were accompanied by John Jorgenson and Steve Duncan from Chris Hillman's DESERT ROSE BAND.

The year 1991 first brought the induction of the original BYRDS into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. At the evening the induction of the BYRDS was announced, the lights went off and everybody heard the first sounds of "Mr. Tambourine Man". The lights went on again and on the stage were Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, David Crosby, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke. They were playing together again for the first time in more than 20 years. Everything looked fine again and some people already started dreaming about a new beginning for the original BYRDS.

David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash had started as an acoustic trio in 1968. In 1991 the circle was complete when the trio performed acoustic again. The audiences and the critics alike were delighted by the new quality of old songs. The acoustic arrangements brought old and new songs to life again. One of these concerts was released on DVD in 2003 as "The Acoustic Concert".

Most of 1995 David Crosby used to recover. David Crosby had formed CPR together with his son James Raymond and his long time guitarist Jeff Pevar in early 1996. CPR stands for CROSBY, PEVAR & RAYMOND. Whenever they had the time they performed together. The music of this group is influenced by melodic jazz as well as by electric rock music.
In 1998 CPR was releasing a live 2-CD-set (Live At Cuesta College"), which the group was selling on their own. Shortly after the group also released a studio album.

When Neil Young came along to add some playing to one of the songs, he liked what he heard and decided to stay and even offered some new compositions. In February 1999 David Crosby mentioned in an interviews: "The rumors about a 1999 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young reunion are indeed true." He explained that the group were in their final stages of mixing a new album, which had started as a new CROSBY, STILLS & NASH release. The album was finally released in October 1999. The plans for a new CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG tour originally stated that the tour would start in July 1999, but then it was postponed to January 2000. In November the group started their rehearsals.

The group also played a tour of America and Europe in the summer of 2001. Early 2004 CPR toured again, playing lots of new songs.

CROSBY & NASH recorded their first album since 1976 in 2004 together with CPR and some old friends. The album was simply called "Crosby & Nash". For the world tour of 2005 they decided to exchange Jeff Pevar by Dean Parks, because they wanted to have a different sound to CPR.
