David Geffen, who was the president of Asylum Records, was convinced that this new group had the potential to become a big star unit. He spent 12.500 US$ for the equipment of the EAGLES and he told them to become a real unit. So Randy Meisner, Glenn Frey, Don Henley and Bernie Leadon went to Aspen Colorado, where they played for several weeks in a little club called "The Gallery".
They had to play every evening in front of 500 people. The EAGLES had to play four sets per evening. The songs they played covered every song they ever learned. So the audience got a chance to hear a lot of original compositions by the various group members, but of course they also played songs from their previous groups. Rock'n'roll standards by Chuck Berry were followed by compositions of the BEATLES or songs written by Neil Young. When they were playing the last evenings in the Gallery, Glyn Johns was brought in to listen to the band. He liked what he heard and agreed to produce the debut album of the EAGLES, but only if they came to England to record over there. The EAGLES agreed to do so and in the winter of 1971 / 72 they came to London and recorded the material which later on was released as the debut album.
The first single release by the EAGLES - "Take It Easy" - was a huge hit in America. The debut album also sold very good. After concerts with JETHRO TULL or Joe Cocker the EAGLES returned to the recording studios to work on their second album. Together with John David Souther and Jackson Browne they had the idea to record an album about desperados. They did not only record their own songs but also some compositions by outside musicians. The subsequent album "Desperado" was another hit for the group. They were mainly successful in America, but after the release of their second album they also started to look for success in Europe. During their concerts they found out that the audiences liked thr rock orientated material better and so they decided to include more rock'n'roll in their music. While recording the songs they recognized that it would be almost impossible to deliver the same sound on stage with just four musicians. In the end they added Don Felder, an old friend from Bernie Leadon, who had just come to Los Angeles, to their line-up.

During the long tours that followed, the importance of Don Felder as the fifth member became clear. Glenn Frey could change from guitar to keyboards and Bernie Ledaon could pick up his banjo whenever the songs asked for it. Don Felder could play the mandolin in addition to his guitar so that the EAGLES always had the right instruments for their music. At the beginning of their career the EAGLES were able to learn a lot about themselves by playing in the Gallery. With Don Felder they played a lot of concerts and there they developed their new sound. When they went back to the studio to record their next album they had not only new songs to record, but also a lot of experience in playing together. "One Of These Nights" became their biggest success so far and of course this album helped to succeed on an international level.

At the end of 1975 the group decides to reduce the country music in their playlist in order to play more rock music. Bernie Leadon, who did not like that idea and who was tired of touring decided to leave the EAGLES at this point. He was replaced by Joe Walsh, a renowned guitarist, who had prior played with JAMES GANG.
At first the group went on a tour to Asia and Australia. Joe Walsh did not try to play the same parts as Bernie Leadon. He made sure that he could play his beloved rock'n'roll. After their return to America the EAGLES went back to the studio to record their next album. It took almost the whole year to finish the album. In between they played a few concerts in America, but most of the year they spent in the studio. The album was called "Hotel California" and it became the biggest success of the group. All in all the album offers a lot of rock'n'roll elements but the ballads and even the country influence is still there.
The "Hotel California" tour offered everything the fans liked: all the hits, a lot of country incluence (acoustic guitars and mandolin), and even more rock'n'roll. The EAGLES were also playing some of Joe Walsh's old songs so that most fans could hear lots of new songs. In September 1977 after the end of the tour Randy Meisner decides to leave the EAGLES. After almost twenty years as a professional musicians he wanted to spent some more time with his family.

The EAGLES did not have to search for a long time for a new bass player. Timothy B. Schmit, who had replaced Randy Meisner in POCO in 1969, accepted to take the place. The year 1978 brought extensive tours for the EAGLES so that Timothy B. Schmit could be integrated into the group. He even brought some of his old POCO songs to the song list of the EAGLES. At the end of the year the first record by the new EAGLES was released. It was a single with the songs "Please Come Home For Christmas" and "Funky New Year". Rumours about a new album of the EAGLEs were spreading fast. At first the fans could read that the group was planning to release a triple album, but in the end when the album was finally released early 1979 it was just a single album. The album was meeting mixed reception. Some described it as a product ideal for the charts, others ment it was the worst album the group ever recorded. Some songs sounded as cover versions of other known songs. But dispite all the critics the album was very successful and showed that the group was as strong as ever.
At the end of 1980 the group released their first live album. The album presented songs from the tours of 1977 (still featuring Randy Meisner) as well as the new tours from 1978 and 1979. The double album is good representation of an EAGLES concert - all of the hits are present, even Joe Walsh's solo hit "Life's Been Good". At the time of the albums release nobody knew that this should be the last album for a very long time. A split of the EAGLES had never been announced, but there was no group activity for the next 14 years.

Nobody really could believe the rumours that the EAGLES would come together again, as it had been almost 14 years since the live album had been released. During all those years the individual members had told the journalists in various interviews that the group would at latest return after the hell has frozen over. In 1994 the EAGLES were approached by MTV to record a MTV-Unplugged show for them. The five musicians really met and they even recorded a few new songs. After several rehearsals they filmed and recorded two nights at Irvine Meadows in California. From these recordings an album was edited and released. The title of the reunion album which presented four new studio recordings and a selection of live tracks from the MTV Unplugged show was "Hell Freezes Over". After the release of the album the EAGLES started the "Hell Freezes Over" world tour, which lasted all in all almost three years. 1997 the group announced that they needed a break, which they took.
The next time the EAGLES played together was the so called "Millenium Concert" in Los Angeles. Approximately one hour of thiat concert was later released within the box set release "Selected Works 1972 - 1999".

2000: EAGLES - Selected Works 1972 - 1999 (4-CD-Box;62575-2-B) |
In February 2001 Don Henley and Glenn Frey announced that they had asked Don Felder to leave the EAGLES. The new quartet line-up started another world tour and just like their last tour they were accompanied by several back-up musicians. Throughout the tour there were rumours that the EAGLES had almost completed a new studio album, but in the end nothing was released. In 2003 the EAGLES started another world tour. They called the tour "Farewell 1 Tour", explaining that they were old enough to start a farewell tour, but that they were not sure, whether this would be their last, thus calling it "Farewell 1". To coincide with the tour they even released a new CD single. The single was released by their own Eagles Recording Co. and contained a DVD with two mixes of the new song "Hole In The World" (one being a 5.1 mix, the other one the stereo mix). As bonus material the DVD contained "Making The Video" sequences as well as some backup information. In addition to the DVD there was also a CD included with just the song "Hole In The World". Of course there was a lot of talk about the next EAGLES album, but nobody dared to mention a release date.
As not all the fans were able to attend the "Farewell 1" Concerts The EAGLES decided to release a double DVD of their concert in Melbourne and to offer an edited version (lasting just an hour) to TV stations all over the world. The double DVD was released in 2005.
In 2006 the EAGLES came to Europe to present their "Farewell 1" show. The tour opened in Barcelona and there Don Henley had an important announcement to make: The new album will be out before Christmas 2006 and it will be called "The Long Road To Eden".
